Screen-printing is method of printing that makes customizing graphic apparel possible. It is when you apply ink onto a surface through a prepared screen of fine materials so as to create a picture or pattern. The most common application of this technique is to manufacture a customized shirt.
Though it sounds simple enough there are a vast number of variables to consider when beginning a screen-printing project. What type of surface are you printing on? How many colors do you want? How complicated is the design you want on the shirt? These questions are just scratching the surface of how many considerations must be taken before starting this process. Allow us to walk you through the procedure step by step.
First, determine what design you want. The design of the image you want on your customized shirt determines how many screens will be needed for the project, and how many colors of ink will be used. When making your own shirt you typically have a design already in mind. However, the design needs to be in vector format. That way certain dimensions are guaranteed to be met because vector format will allow the designer to make alterations to scale, pixel free.
Then decide the garment. The garment is an important choice because it can give the design a completely different look depending on the fabric the garment is made of, and you may want the garment to serve a particular need. For example, if you were ordering shirts for a family vacation to Hawaii, you probably wouldn’t want to print your design on heavy-duty button down jackets. Also, different materials will react differently in the process of screen-printing, and it is important to keep that in mind when choosing your garments.
The next step is determining a size run. How many small shirts, how many large shirts? Please keep in mind we have a minimum order of a dozen prints.
After we have your design, with the colors you want, and a size run; then we will send you a mock up of what the final product will look like. If you are happy with the mock up, then we will send you an order confirmation link. Once you hit “approve” we begin setting up for production.
To set up we first begin by mixing inks until we get the perfect hue of color that you requested. In doing this we are able to reuse extra ink from past projects, instead of disposing of the excess. This method is better for the environment and our bottom line, the savings of which are passed on to you. Additionally all the ink we use is non-toxic and phthalate compliant, which is the cleanest and most environmentally responsible ink available.
Then we attach the screens to our press machine, delegate each color of ink needed to its corresponding screen, and voila! Brand new customized shirts are ready to go through our dryer. Once dried, the order is ready to be packaged up, shipped out, and is ready to wear!
